German wine is different from other wines, with a light, lively and fruity taste that's the result of Germany's unique climate and geology. Most of Germany's thirteen wine-producing regions are in the south and south-west of the country, where they straddle the border between the humid Gulf Stream climate of the west and the dry Continental climate of the east. They're among the most northerly wine-producing regions in the world, enjoying a long growing season and mild summer temperatures that yield delicate wines relatively low in alcohol. In keeping with the diversity of Germany's wine-producing regions, there's no standard German wine; instead you'll encounter many different styles that reflect the various types of soil and varieties of grape associated with the different regions.
